Self Pay FAQs

  • What is self pay?
Self payment is an option which makes private treatment available to everyone, not to those just with health insurance. At The Harley Street hospital, you don’t actually need health insurance to access the best levels of medical treatment. We offer an alternative range of ways to pay, so you can choose which one best suits you and your finances. That’s because our focus is on getting you back to the best health possible, so we do everything we can to get you there.

  • Am I still entitled to NHS care if I choose to pay for myself?
Yes, if you are eligible for healthcare in the UK you will continue to be, whether or not you have chosen to pay for any treatment yourself as a private patient.

  • Where can I find your prices?
Many of our treatment prices are listed on our website, these are guide prices and the exact cost of your treatment will be confirmed once you have had your consultation appointment. Not all prices are available online so please call us if you have any queries on 0844 589 2610

  • What charges can I expect if I am a self-paying patient?
Your consultant will charge a fee for an initial consultation. Sometimes this is the only cost you will incur, but your specialist may also require diagnostic tests such as x-rays, scans and blood tests in order to fully investigate your health concern. The cost of these examinations will be payable to the hospital in addition to your consultant’s fee.

Often these tests can be carried out on the same day as your consultation and results will be reported by a consultant specialist in pathology or radiology, with a focus on getting your result as soon as possible.

Sometimes your consultant may recommend an outpatient procedure or treatment during your outpatient appointment, in this case you would be charged separately by both your consultant and the hospital for the same procedure. These payments comprise: a professional fee for the consultants expertise and the hospital fee for the facilities, equipment, consumables etc..

    In summary:

    • Consultation fee – direct from your Consultant.
    • Tests and examinations including scopes in outpatients – from the Hospital and Consultant.
    • Minor surgical procedures – from the Hospital and Consultant.
    • Blood tests and/or histo-pathology – from the Hospital.
    • Diagnostic tests (eg x-rays, ultrasound scans) – from the Hospital.
    • Physiotherapy treatment (including crutches) – from the Hospital.
    • Prescriptions for drugs and any take-home medication – from the Hospital.

  • Can I pay for a test or scan?
Yes this is something we can help you with. Your price will include the cost of the test or scan and the report itself. Reporting will be provided by our in-house Radiologists and Pathologists. The tests or scans will require a GP or clinician’s referral so we can be accurate on what we are testing for or the precise part of the body we will be scanning.
  • Do I have to get a referral from my doctor first?
A GP referral is not always required if you are self funding your consultation. Our self pay enquiry team can advise you. However, a referral letter is always welcome – the information your doctor has about your medical history can be helpful and will ensure you’re booked in with the right consultant or for the right test or scan you need.
  • I don’t want to wait for a NHS referral. Can I get one privately?
Yes, our hospital offers a private GP service and you can expect to be seen within 48 hours of booking. Find out more about our Private GP service.
  • I’m looking for a consultation that doesn’t require a referral. How do I proceed?
Some treatments don’t require a GP referral or some consultants will see you without a GP referral. If you’re in doubt if you need a referral please get in touch with us on 0844 589 2610 or make an enquiry via the online form.

  • I’ve already been consulted on the NHS but don’t want to wait for treatment. Can I get treatment privately?
Yes, your NHS Consultant can refer you for private treatment. Many of our consultants also work for the NHS, so you may even be able to stay with the same consultant or choose another if this is not an option.

  • How quickly can I be seen?
Most outpatient appointments can be made within 72 hours or at a time to suit you.

  • Will I see the same consultant every time?
Yes, we ensure that the same consultant looks after you from your first initial consultation appointment through to your treatment and then your follow-up care.

  • How and when do I pay?
For self-funded patients, you will be required to pay the full cost of your procedure before coming into hospital. This can be paid for by credit or debit card. If paying by personal cheque we will require this 14 days in advance. If you have not been offered a fixed cost care package and your charges are estimated, our customer enquiries office will keep you updated on your account.

  • Do you offer a finance payment plan?
At the moment, we do not provide any services of this type.

  • How do I book a consultation?
All you need to do is call The Harley Street hospital on 0844 589 2610 or fill out our online enquiry form and we can help to arrange for you to see a consultant of your choice when it suits you. Most appointments can be arranged within 72 hours depending on your choice of consultant
